Principles and possibilities of parametric design

Parametric design can help you to design complex structures and adjust your designs easily by a mouse click, even in a later stage of the design process. The advantage is that you can adapt your designs to data from its surroundings, optimize your designs and automate your calculations. The possibilities of parametric design are tremendous and an increasing number of companies in the construction industry is using it.

In this course the principles and possibilities of parametric design are explained in a practical and construction-oriented way. During the first day, you will get a hands-on introduction to the software, Grasshopper3D. The second day focuses on parametric engineering: automated constructive workflows based on different analysis applications.

During the optional hackathon, you can solve your own business problem or realise your ideas for a parametric design. You will work independently of in small groups on your own case under supervisions of an expert. The teachers are field experts and parametric software developers.

  • Gain hands-on experience with parametric design in Grasshopper3D

Intended for

This course program is suitable for anyone with an interest in parametric design working in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry: from draftsman to engineer, from structural engineer to building contractor. The course starts with the basics, so no prior knowledge is required. Knowledge of structural analysis software is an advantage, but it will also be explained during the course if necessary. Do you already have some experience with parametric design? Ask about the possibilities to follow the hackathon!

    Day 3 and 4: Hackathon

    The hackathon program is blank. On the first day, a basic scripting and programming course will be given. After that, you will work independently or in small groups under supervision of an expert to solve the business problem you have brought to the hackathon. At the end of the hackathon, hopefully you have taken the first steps towards a solution that can be implemented in your organisation.
