During this course you will learn how to make electricity grids more reliable by effectively applying protections.

Minimize the consequences of disruptions and outages with power system protection

How do you make electricity grids more reliable? Protections quickly switch off the disrupted part of the electricity grid, so that the consequences for the total energy supply remain small. In this course you will learn how to apply security effectively and efficiently.

Disruptions, such as short circuits, are inevitable. Failure plays an important role in the design and maintenance of security systems in a network. To properly analyze failure you need knowledge of symmetrical components, current transformers, critical trip time, protection principles and algorithms in digital relays.

It is important to know where and how the different security principles can be applied and how to ensure the selectivity of security. The equipment and software with which you check the accuracy and correct operation of the security is also relevant.

Making high-voltage and low-voltage grids more reliable

During this course you will learn:

  • How the differential, distance and maximum current protection works: important applications of these protections in the electricity grids
  • How symmetrical components are applied and why knowledge of them is important for security specialists
  • To ensure the proper functioning of protections during the different phases of their lifespan. You will gain insight into the standards and testing of protection relays.
  • Whether IEC 61850 fits into a cyber-secure substation
  • Everything about IEC 61850 protocol services (such as control and GOOSE) for automation and security
  • Which secondary test equipment and software you need to test a secondary installation. This is done by performing 'dynamic testing'.

Intended for

Engineers with basic knowledge of electrical engineering who are involved in securing high-voltage and low-voltage networks at grid operators, power stations, installation companies, industrial and energy companies.
