This course covers the main water-intensive industrial processes that place specific demands on water quality. You will learn how water is properly treated during these processes to enable recycling, reuse, resource recovery or safe discharge.

Water is an essential resource in many production industries. It serves multiple functions: as a transport medium for raw materials, a reaction medium, a cooling agent, feed water for steam generation, and, in various cases, as an ingredient in products.
The fundamentals – Day 1 and 2
The course begins with an overview of the most water-intensive industrial processes and their specific water quality requirements. You will learn how water quality changes during industrial use and why treatment is necessary to enable recycling, reuse or safe discharge. Attention is also given to opportunities for recovering valuable materials from process effluents. Next, the focus shifts to the basic principles of key water treatment technologies aimed at removing unwanted components, recovering valuable substances and conditioning water for reuse in specific processes. Based on the physical form of contaminants – dissolved, colloidal, suspended or particulate – you will discuss the corresponding treatment technologies and their effectiveness.
During the practical sessions and case studies, special attention is given to corrosion, scaling, and fouling (CSF) in industrial water systems. You will learn about the fundamentals of corrosion processes, the use of Pourbaix diagrams, and the most common forms of corrosion. The course also covers the mechanisms behind scaling, examples of scale formation, and (bio)fouling. Risk management is addressed by examining the economic, operational, environmental, and safety consequences of CSF, along with related mechanical, chemical, and microbiological risks. Methods for monitoring, risk assessment, and practical control and mitigation strategies are discussed and applied to participants’ own case studies during a group session.
Advanced topics – Day 3
The course zooms in on selected water treatment technologies, with a focus on advanced design and operational considerations. You will explore system configurations, sizing parameters and cost aspects of treatment systems. In addition, energy recovery from concentrated water streams will be examined, including the production of energy carriers such as methane, hydrogen, and ammonia.
After completing the course, you will be able to:
It is possible to follow the fundamentals module over two days, or the complete course including the advanced module over three days.
