Master lecture series: Design of electrical machines

This theoretical course is specifically originated from an expected professional component contribution for graduate students of electrical engineering with a specialization in energy conversion systems: students learn the analytical methods and multi‐physical tools for solution of problems associated with design and operation of modern classes of brushless electrical machines. Students will also utilize knowledge of mathematics, physics, material and basic engineering sciences in order to effectively analyze a diverse set of fundamental problems in electrical machines working in modern industrial, high‐precision, automotive and robotics systems. They acquire the basic skills of how to approach and deal with real professional situations applying an obtained knowledge on the physical and device level.

Result

The objective of this course for graduate students of electrical engineering with a specialization in energy conversion systems is to introduce the fundamental knowledge for a more advanced analysis of permanent magnet electrical machines and electromagnetic/thermal/mechanical phenomena beyond a basic electromechanics background. The student will learn the electrical, magnetic, thermal loadings, the direct and inverse dq‐transformation to the 2‐3 phase systems of electrical machines and corresponding power circuits, to analyze magnetic (linear and non‐linear) equivalent circuits of electrical machines and use these circuits in design predictions. Furthermore, lectures discuss different types of windings, such as distributed windings, concentrated windings and MMF distribution produced by the specified windings, how to design suitable windings for a given pole‐slot combination. The theory of energy loops for given flux linkages and current profiles and their use for performance calculations: power, torque, losses. The thorough analysis of the operation principles of BLAC and BLDC is treated.     

Intended for

Engineers (TU/HTO level) electrotechnics or physics, who are or will be involved in (some aspects of) the design and engineering of Electrical Machines. 

This master lecture series is open to participants PAO Techniek en Management. Regular students of the TU will attend the lecture series too. The lectures will be held in English.
