Structural aspects in the assessment of high-rise building applications
High-rise development can be a solution to the housing shortage in the Netherlands. The increasing number of new construction plans must be assessed in advance. This course addresses the structural aspects of assessment, covering the foundations and the above-ground parts of high-rise buildings.
Assessing a high-rise building requires evaluating many design aspects of a building application. Examples include the suitability of the load-bearing structure, physical aspects, dynamic properties, wind loading effects, wind nuisance, and possible wind tunnel testing. In addition, the interaction between the structure and the foundation must not be overlooked.
High-rise buildings also impose specific requirements on foundations, not only in design but also in constructability. Key points of attention include foundation stiffness, group effects, and constructability. Basements are usually constructed. In built-up areas this places high demands on predicting the effects on the surrounding environment.
Structural assessment of substructure and superstructure
During the course, you will learn more about:
- the various structural systems and soil–structure interaction;
- the main principles of dynamics (natural frequency and damping) and wind engineering;
- the codes and standards, regulations, and requirements that high-rise buildings impose on foundations;
- the constructability of foundations and whether sufficient consideration has been given to construction aspects;
- monitoring, how to specify it and how to deal with it;
- points of attention, risks, and opportunities for high-rise buildings from a technical and structural perspective.
