During this course you will learn to design power electronic converters through analysis methods and business applications.

Designing and analysis of power electronic converters

The objective of this course is to introduce the necessary knowledge for a more advanced analysis of power electronic components and systems. The student will learn how to quantify the ideal behaviour, and how to deal with representative power switching circuits by means of manual calculations and computer simulations. Furthermore, lectures, exercises and laboratory experiments are used to discuss and illustrate key subjects of power electronics. You will get to know the fundamental behaviour of the most used circuit elements, and learn how these can cooperate to realize a power converter. Additionally, we will pay attention to determining switching losses, EMI aspects and thermal behaviour. In the course also some of the more advanced circuit types such as the Dual Active Bridge converter, Series-Resonant converters and multi-level circuits will be introduced.

Content

Power electronic converters are key building blocks for a wide range of applications, such as power supplies for smart phones, laptops and data centres, variable speed motor drives, interfaces for renewable energy sources and high‐voltage DC transmissions lines. Through methodical analysis, students are shown how to understand and design converters. In many cases industry applications are used as basis of the explanations. The following topics will be treated:

  • Introduction to power converters and their applications
  • Power semiconductor devices + loss calculations
  • Modeling and dimensioning of inductors and transformers
  • Properties of capacitors, isolation, and sensor circuits
  • Non‐isolated DC‐DC converters Buck, Boost, Buck-Boost)
  • Isolated DC‐DC converters (Flyback, DAB, Resonant)
  • Multi-level converters, interleaving and cascading, MMC-circuits, modulation
  • Reliability, sensitivity to radiation and electromechanical wear-out, thermal modelling of converters
  • Electromagnetic compatibility
  • Active line‐frequency rectifiers (AC‐DC converters)

The course comprises 15 lectures of 2 hours each, 7 instruction sessions (2 hours), and 4 lab exercises (4 hours each). For the instructions and labs preparation (homework) is required.

This master lecture series is open to participants PAO Techniek en Management. Regular students of the TUs will attend the lecture series too.

For a successful participation, previous knowledge of power electronics on a BSc level is desired.
The lectures are given in English.
