Learn to assess how a multitude of renewable sources will impact the performance of future high-voltage direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) systems and how to design planning, operational, protection and control solutions.

Renewable energy sources and the impact on the electricity system from a transmission perspective

This course program equips you to evaluate how high penetration of renewable energy sources affects the resiliency and dynamic performance of future hybrid high voltage DC (HVDC)/AC power systems. It also focuses on designing integrated planning, operation, protection and control solutions to ensure secure and affordable energy supply, culminating in a collaborative group report synthesizing case study analyses.

The course focuses on the inclusion of the massive renewable energy sources (RES) and how that influences power system from the transmission perspective. It starts with planning of the power system design, then covers aspects of the control, stability and protection of the HVDC-based power system.

Furthermore, the course covers integration of the RES (hydrogen, wind, solar) from the control perspective, where the concept of grid forming control is being studied as a solution for preserving power system inertia.

It concludes with TSO-DSO coordination, and control room cyber-security guidelines.

The course contains 8 theoretical lectures from 7 lecturers, both from academia (TU Delft) and from industry (TenneT, Gasunie, DNV). Furthermore, there are 4 practical sessions performed in groups using the state-of-the-art real-time simulator RTDS© with the valid use cases from practice in HVDC control and protection, and TSO-DSO coordination.

Impact, analysis and solutions

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain the impact of high RES penetration on the resiliency of future power systems.
  • Analyze the dynamic performance of future power systems with hybrid HVDC/AC configurations under high RES penetration.
  • Design solutions from an integrated planning, operation and control perspective for integrating high RES volumes whilst maintaining the affordability and security of supply.
  • Write a group report to synthesize the analysis and findings from different case studies.

Intended for

These master lecture series are meant for both academia and industry as it brings knowledge from practice integrated in the theory.

This master lecture series is open to participants PAO Techniek en Management. Regular students of the TU will attend the lecture series too.
The lectures will be taught in English.

In cooperation with Delft University of Technology.
