Mastercollegeserie: Design and realization of power converters

The objective of this course is to introduce the necessary knowledge for a more advanced analysis of power electronic components and systems beyond a basic background. The student will learn how to quantify the ideal behavior, and how to deal with some practical limitations of representative power switching circuits by means of manual calculations and computer simulations. Furthermore, lectures and exercises thoroughly discuss key subjects of power electronics that are important with respect to a practical realization and optimization of a power electronic system, e.g. how to select suitable power components, how to determine switching losses, calculation of high frequency losses, EMI filter design and realization, thermal considerations, etc.

Content

Power electronic converters are key building blocks for a wide range of applications, such as power supplies for datacenters, variable speed motor drives, interfaces for renewable energy sources and high‐voltage DC transmissions lines, etc. Through methodical analysis methods, this course attempts to teach students how to design converters and to awaken the students’ creativity to synthesize new converter structures. In all cases industry applications are used as basis of the explanations.
