Quality of current and voltage

The performance of installations depends on the quality of current and voltage (power quality). The expanding pressure on the Dutch electricity network creates a challenge in securing power quality.

High distortion of the current will result in reduced lifetime of several components, overloading or reduction of current capacity. 

Distortion of the voltage could also result in undesired disconnection or malfunctioning of components (and therefore processes). Several research projects indicate the high additional costs related to poor power quality.

Power quality solutions for new technologies

This course handles:

  • sources decreasing the quality of current and voltage
  • problems related to poor power quality
  • possible solutions for poor power quality
  • analysis of current distortion characteristics in new technologies such as electric transport, new concept of lighting and photovoltaic systems
  • current characteristics (inrush currents, harmonic currents) of new technologies
  • examples of problems in new technologies

Intended for  

Technicians (academic or higher education) with basic knowledge of electrical engineering, working at grid operators, installation -, inspection -, measuring – and industrial companies, responsible for the design or operation of electricity networks or installations.
