Master lecture series: Power system grounding and protection

Grounding practices and the influence on applied protection principles

This subject provides knowledge about types of grounding systems in high voltage networks. The analysis of the effect of grounding resistance for different grounding systems is studied. The type of relays used for the protection of electric power systems are studied. Attention is given to overcurrent, differential, distance protection and Bucholtz protection of transformers and to the coordination of relays as well as current transformer selections.

The goals of the course are:

  • to obtain knowledge about typical grounding practices and how grounding system influences applied protection principles;
  • to obtain knowledge on how overcurrent, differential and distance protection is realized;
  • basic knowledge on some protective schemes;
  • knowledge about testing of protective relays by RTDS and Omicron.

This master lecture series is open to participants PAO Techniek en Management. Regular students of the TU will attend the lecture series too. The lectures will be taught in English.
