Electromagnetic compatibility

Preventing EMI and meeting EMC-requirements

The complexity and prevalence of electronic devices increase. The chances for interference caused by the use of multiple devices is an issue with nearly all forms of electronics. The field of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) studies these issues.

Today the electromagnetic compatibility of devices – their components, systems, and modules – is an absolute necessity. Think of warranting the reliability of medical devices, automation and wireless communication. EMC guidelines are included in European regulation since 1 January 1996.

Following the guidelines, electric and electronic devices have to comply with minimum standards concerning emissions and immunity. In specific applications much stricter requirements often apply.

Applying knowledge and skills of the EMC course

After this course you have collected most important theoretical and practical knowledge of EMC:

  • You know the characteristics of electromagnetic fields.
  • You know the existing interference causes and sources.
  • You are able to decrease a multitude of interference problems to fundamental EMC problems.
  • You can prevent and solve EMC problems by making responsible technical and economic measures.
  • You know how to execute EMC measurements, calculations and experiments.
  • You have studied emission, propagation and susceptibility of interference signals and economic return.
  • You are (in an early stage) able to improve the efficiency of the design process and save unnecessary costs.
  • You can apply EMC in installing electrical devices or systems.

The focus of this course will be on providing understanding of the field rather than delivering receipts for the solution for a particular symptom.

Intended for

Engineers who want to prevent or solve system failure in designing, producing, installing, and maintaining electronic devices and those who have to comply with legal requirements in the field of EMC.

You have a master or bachelor in electrical engineering, automatic control engineering or physics or comparable knowledge acquired through experience. Knowledge of EMC is not a requirement. Some experience in the field of network analysis is desired.
